TEEING OFF Tire-slamming drill ’■» All swings should be identical at impact: a straight left arm with the wrist bowed toward the target slightly open shoulders and a tucked-in right arm This drill helps the novice understand the impact position, where the fast movement is hard to picture ■ Find an old tire and an old iron. ■ Set up with the tire just inside your left heel (1). ■ Make your normal swing (2). ■ Don't swing too hard. ■ When the club hits, hold the position long enough to check your positioning as described above (3). ■ Adjust as necessary. Note that your impact position is NOT the same as at address. PGA Professional v<. -v:: jfcV'---#«■*-- ■A"' ' Small kings and big beeliners — plus a really big barracuda -• were the features of this catch aboard - -8—— - -mmm mmv -m m m®a— the Kingfisher last week. Kings also resurfaced for Oak Island pier anglers over the weekend. Cape Fear fishing By Jim Harper Staff Writer Big fish returned to the Oak Island piers Sunday and Monday, pleasing pier-enders who had patiently waited them out. At .Ocean Crest on Monday Joe Goin reported five kings up to 22 pounds as well as a 15-pound cobia. Jim Ratcliff at Long Beach Pier reported his Monday anglers landed four big cobia — including two by the father-son team of Donnie Boyd (36 pounds) and Gerald Boyd (32 pounds). Four kings in the 20-pound class were landed at Long Beach on Sun day. Ratcliff said speckled trout were still hitting live shrimp fished under a bobber, and Spanish mackerel and bluefish were being caught on metal plugs and gold-hook rigs. Goin said Spanish and blues were also showing up in coolers at Ocean Crest, and said panfishermen were doing well with spots, croakers and whiting. Offshore trailers continued to do well with kings, mainly southwest of Frying Pan tower. Capt. Mike Helms on the Salty Dog reported a dozen nice kings there Sunday, including a 35 pounder that hit a large live bait in Tennis results Women’s round-robin tennis ac tion resumed weekly play last Thursday at Smithville Township District Park. Barbara Vice retained the first place position, with Donnie Kirby second and Marie Miller third. All women interested in participa ting are encouraged to join play at 7:30 p.m. each Thursday. Mixed doubles Mixed doubles round-robin tennis will be played Monday evenings at 7:30 at Smithville Township District Park, beginning June 22. Players should be at the courts no later than 7:20 p.m. tended for grouper, and on Monday Capt. Robbie Helms aboard the Kingfisher had ten kings, an assort ment of small barracuda and dol phin, some nice black bass and other reef fish in the same area. Capt. Jake Jacobson on the Idle On had a good catch of reef fish on Sunday in the vicinity of the tower. Out of Lockwood Folly Inlet, Capt. Mervin Darnell on the Fugi tive had a near-limit of Spanish mackerel Saturday when a strong northeaster kept him inshore, then had a good catch of kings and bot tom fish Sunday and on Monday had more kings and reef fish about 39 miles due south of the inlet. At Wildlife Bait and Tackle, Jimmy Price said trout, puppy drum and small flounder were biting in the Cape Fear River. "I drifted in the river the other day and caught 19 flounder," Price reported, "and 17 of them were throw-backs — under 13 inches. If anybody wanted to catch big floun der, I’d say use live mud minnows for bait until mullets start showing r up, and fish them around structure." Price said that trout and puppy drum were hitting rubber minnows with a quarter-ounce lead head. He reported that bottom fishermen were catching whiling in the Cape Fear River, and also said sheepshead were now feeding around the pilings at Pfizer dock. Offshore anglers should continue to catch kings over the weekend, while those working farther offshore are likely to do well with dolphin, wahoo and tuna. Larger kings are a good prospect over the inshore artificial reefs, as w’ell as off both river bars and on the Lighthouse Rock chain. On the piers, Spanish and blues are still the best bets on lures, and trout are most likely to be hitting live shrimp, while live baiters will be fishing for cobia and kings with good hope of success. In the rivers, flounder, trout and drum will be good bets on live bait, and flounder and blues both should be eager to hit cut bait in the surf, especially around the inlets.
